ゴミ分別 (How to separate garbage)

When you come to Japan, you may encounter serious problem — separating garbage.

This document shows how to separate your garbage in Yokohama-City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Yokohama has strict policy, so you must separate:
(1) Burnable Garbage
(2) Dry-cell Batteries
(3) Spray Cans
(4) Non-burnable Garbage
(5) Plastic containers/Package
(6) Cans, Bottles and Plastic PET Bottles
(7) Small Metal Items
(8) Recycle paper
(9) Used Cloth
(10) Large Garbage
(see: How to Put Out Your Garbage and Recyclables – Yokohama)

Can you believe it? I can’t distinguish between (4) and (5) yet. :-)
They say that items of (4) has “プラ” mark, such as below:

Japan, what a diligent country!

アニメフィギュア (anime figure)

Of course, I don’t mean about skating, but about anime and manga.
Japanese Otaku *loves* anime and manga figures. Yes, I also hava some figures. :-)

アリサ・サザンクロス
This figure is “Alisa Southerncross” from Sgt. Frog.

At figure shops in Akihabara, You can see a number of figures tidily displayed in glass case — It’s really grand view.
I’ll post articles about Akihabara in another time.

桜と花見 (cherry blossom and Hanami)

花見 means “flower viewing”, and this “flower” is mostly cherry blossom.

Hanami is a sort of outdoor party, so eating and drinking is more important than viewing flowers. In Spring, many Japanese people have lunch or dinner beneath the cherry trees.

I took these photos at Shukugawara Sta., JR Nambu Line, Kanagawa Prefecture.
During the Hanami season, famous park like Ueno is too crowded to enjoy…

交通信号(traffic light)

This is a typical Japanese traffic light directed to cars. It has green, yellow, red light. Each color means:
green: go
yellow: stop, unless the emergency brake is needed
red: stop

Green lights are often called “blue” in Japan.
Young people tend to call blue, and older people tend to call green. (Why? I don’t know.)

personal resume

Of course, you need to send your resume to get a job in Japan. This picture shows ordinary one.
I must write my age, sex, and must attach my facial portrait. Yes, recruiting people by basing on their age is legal in Japan.

Maybe you’ve heard “年功序列”(seniority system). This is why Japanese company make much account of your age. (not your skill, but your age!)

From the point of view of business, unfortunately, Japan is a closed society.
Many people from other countries find it difficult to work in Japan.

自動販売機(vending machine)

Maybe you’ve heard that vending machines are overflowed in Japan. That’s absolutely right, the machines are everywhere! You can find them at the station, on the street, at the center of rice paddy, at the top of the mountain. (believe me)

You can buy drink, cigarette, railway tickets, ice cream, rice, vegetables, pornography.

公衆電話 (Pay Telephone)

Since cell phone is in widespread use in Japan, you can see an empty phone booth everywhere.

The green pay phone is old fashion. You can use a telephone card.
The gray one is newer. Of course, telephone cards are available. And you can turn up/down the volume, use your notebook with the modular connector.

赤ちょうちん(Akachōchin)

Do you know 居酒屋(Izakaya)? If you want to have a drink in Japan with your friends, let’s go to Izakaya. The prices at Izakaya is very reasonable.

Izakaya is commonly called 赤ちょうちん(Akachōchin; red lantern) for its advertising display. You can see it in this photo, with printed hiragana “やきとり”(Yakitori; grilled chicken).
